Gourmet Chips

"If you going to indulge, do it right - with top-of-the-line, crispy, crunchy, perfectly salted potato chips, not a bag of greasy crumbs. All our picks have little or no bad fat and taste nearly indistinguishable from full-fat munchies.

Kettle Bakes Potato Chips - Made from whole sliced potatoes, this new line tastes far superior to the average baked chip (and disappeared from the office within minutes).

Terra Blues - While not expressly a 'better-for-you' brand, these relatively low-fat, thickly cut chips made from exotic blue potatoes provide a substantial crunch.

Michael Season's Reduced Fat Honey Barbeque - Thin and crispy with a light, smoky, backyard barbeque flavor, these chips are fried, but in heart healthy peanut oil."

Drink To Your Health

"Red wine isn't the only disease-fighting drink on the bar menu: Researchers at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth have discovered a new compound in cranberries (the juice of which is a main ingredient in a cosmopolitan cocktail) that inhibits the growth and spread of cancer cells. Bonus: The compound may be most active in alcohol. Just stick to one cocktail - other research shows that consuming more than two drinks per day is linked with an increased risk of cancer."

Exercise Your Mind

"A daily 30-minute walk or a one-mile run may be enough to keep your mind strong for years to come. According to a new study at the University of Florida, regular light activity may decrease cellular aging in the brain. Experts believe this type of oxidative damage plays a role in the loss of brain cells that contributes to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases."

From Fitness Magazine, April 2006.

The Right Amount of Carbs

"We're just as over Atkins as you are, but if you'd like to still reap some of the benefits of a low-carb diet, try this: Take just 10 percent of your total calories and shift them from carbs to either protein or monosaturated fats (like those in nuts, seeds and canola oil). A new study from Johns Hopkins University shows that getting about half of your calories from carbs (versus the 60 percent typical of most Americans' diets) can cut heart disease risk by 15 percent."

Baked Options

FYI: Talked to someone the other day that is a chip officinado and he tells me that the Baked Lays Cheddar and Sour Cream and the Baked Cheetos are the best of the Baked options. He claims that the Cheetos are so close to the crunchy version, you might not even notice the difference. Looks like they even have the hot Cheetos version....just for you cheese eaters out there like me!!!!

Mishka' Week

I have been terrible about logging this past week...too much going on and I haven't really been eating full meals...keep forgetting.

Anyhow, I plan to get on the bandwagon tomorrow (Monday) with a fitness and eating routine and I'll be back here posting my food and exercise as well. I have a college reunion that I have been almost talked into attending in May so I would like to set that as my timeframe goal for getting a bit fitter and happier with my body...
